Corpus Christi - Echoes from Emmaus

This Sunday brings us the great solemnity of Corpus Christi – the celebration of Christ truly present in the Eucharist; truly present to us in the here-and-now. 

In this week’s Pearls of the Interior Life (which will come out tomorrow), we look at the unusual “coincidences” that inspired the establishment of this solemnity by Pope Urban IV in 1264. 

And, especially, we look at what this solemnity means to our interior life and relationship with Christ.

Back on the third Sunday of Easter the Gospel reading was the account of the disciples unknowingly traveling with the Risen Lord on the road to Emmaus.  Even though the travelers were right there with Christ, in the flesh, He was hidden to them. 

You might want to take another look at that episode, since there are parallels to be found in Christ “hidden” in the Eucharist – as we’ll see in our follow-up messages.
