The much-hated god of Science

Aug 28, 2023

On Thursday, when we started considering “Who do you say that I AM,” and its corollary, “what else do you say god is?” - we offered a working definition of a god (little “g”) – anything that holds great power over us.

In that rudimentary sense, science could be considered a “god” in that, barring a miracle, the rules of science are immutable.  It’s not science exactly, but the laws of nature as revealed by science that are immutable.  Those laws of nature are a god of sorts - just try denying gravity.

Of course, in another way, people have turned science into a different sort of god – not only a source of immutable laws of nature, but as a pseudo-religion to dictate human social behavior.

This is where things get interesting.

Anything we turn into “god” that isn’t the One True God will ultimately become a source of conflict.

It’s obvious with something like money, or drugs, or illicit sexual behavior.  When we make those things our gods, they will consume us – that’s pretty clear to anyone who isn’t a booky, drug dealer, or Hollywood screen writer.

But what about science?  What could be controversial about the immutable laws of nature?

It turns out, quite a bit.  Why?  Because the immutable laws of nature ultimately reveal the Creator of the laws.

That’s why science is sooo last century.  Postmodernism has moved on.  Math is racist.  Science is a little more than a weapon of supremacy.

Take as Exhibit A, Dr. Neil DeGrasse-Tyson – widely recognized as one of the standard-bearers of science (and a notorious hater of all things religious).  As you may well be aware, he recently declared that “Apparently the XX/XY chromosomes are insufficient… we portray the gender of our choice… today I feel 80% female … tomorrow I’ll feel 80% male… ”

Chromosomes are insufficient.

Science is insufficient.

Science, more and more, will become the enemy.

Try to have a meaningful discussion about the shot.

Try to have a meaningful discussion about when human life begins.

Try to have a meaningful discussion about climate change.

Try to have a meaningful discussion about the failures of Darwinian evolution theory.

And on and on.

See how long it lasts before you get shut down with an emotional appeal, or with the classic, “well, I just follow the experts…”   Experts like Degrasse-Tyson.

When society rejects the true God, one by one it will end up rejecting all the other little gods.  And what will be left in the end?  It seems our culture is bound and determined to find out.

Blessings on your journey with Christ –

Postscript:  “Who do you say that I AM?”  Mt 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"

They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.  For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.  And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.  I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.  Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
